Terms and conditions

Initial discussion with the client will establish:

• The extent of the work (word count, illustrations): whether there are any exclusions, such as footnotes, bibliography – special conditions apply to students.
• The brief (copy edit level, proof read).
• The medium (usually Word or pdf).
• The date of delivery to me, and the date of completion.
• Any agreed expenses to be met by the client.

Alteration in any of these matters may affect the cost of the job to the client. If the client subsequently adds significantly to the scope of the work to the extent that it interferes with commitments I have already made I reserve the right to cancel (or postpone) the job.
The rate or fee for the job will take into account costs of ancillary work, such as writing and responding to queries and assimilating the brief. The rate for the job can be a flat fee, an hourly rate or a rate per thousand words.

Insurance and indemnity
I keep digital back-ups of all work in process, and I hold professional indemnity insurance. Any legal issues that arise out of the client’s work are the client’s responsibility.

Confidentiality and data protection
The client’s work is confidential and their work will not be discussed or shared with third parties.

New data protection regulations demand explicit consent of clients in the storage and sharing of personal data. I do not carry any personal data belonging to clients, expect personal addresses, which are used only for invoicing according to HMRC requirements. Invoices are kept for seven years, and I will be happy to dispose of invoices on request after this period. If the client requests I can delete the job from my files immediately on completion of the work.

I will not share clients’ email addresses with third parties.
